Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico City to discuss deepening economic and security cooperation. The talks, held at the National Palace, focused on bolstering the USMCA trade pact, border security, and coordination for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the U.S.

Key agenda items included combating drug and firearms trafficking, as well as strategies to curb organized crime. A joint declaration is expected, outlining commitments to enhance cooperation in energy, security, transportation, and trade—particularly in the automotive sector.

Carney was accompanied by Canada’s foreign affairs chief and the minister responsible for U.S. trade, along with nearly a dozen corporate leaders, including CEOs from Bank of Nova Scotia, TC Energy, and Canadian Pacific Kansas City. The meeting underscores both nations' efforts to present a united front ahead of the USMCA review and potential tariff negotiations with the U.S.
